Nose & Sinus Conditions

Nose & Sinus Conditions

Overview

The nose and sinuses are the gateways to the lungs. Therefore, it is important that you keep your nose and sinuses functioning and healthy. An unhealthy or problematic nasal condition can lead to further health issues, including the worsening of asthma, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Important Functions Of Nose & Sinus

  • Breathing & detection of smell
  • Protection against bacteria and dirt
  • Shapes the quality of our voice
  • Humidification and warming of the air we breathe

  • Figure 1a - Skin Prick Test (SPT) for nasal allergy - Different droplets of allergens are placed on the forearm. A very small needle is used to prick the outer layer of skin to allow the allergen to enter the skin.

  • Figure 1b - The forearm is assessed about 15-20 minutes later. The size of the wheal is measured for interpretation of the SPT.

  • A flexible nasoendoscope (lighted scope with a camera on one end) is inserted through the nasal cavity and is guided to the posterior nasal space (back of nose) and to the level of the larynx (voice box). The procedure is done in the clinic setting after application of topical anaesthesia (numbing agent) and decongestant.

Symptoms of Nose & Sinus Conditions

The symptoms experienced often depend on the particular nasal or sinus conditions. Common ones may include:

Causes of Nose & Sinus Conditions

Several factors can contribute to these issues. Understanding the underlying causes is important for effective sinus condition treatment and nose care in Singapore:

  • Infections (viral and bacterial leading to sinusitis)
  • Allergies (pollen, dust mites, pet dander causing inflammation and rhinitis)
  • Anatomical abnormalities (such as a deviated nasal septum)
  • Environmental factors (air pollution and irritants)

Treatment Options for Nose & Sinus Conditions

Various treatment options are available for nasal and sinus conditions:

Non-surgical treatments:

  • Medications (antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, decongestants)
  • Saline nasal rinses for improved nose care
  • Avoiding known allergens
  • Managing environmental factors (e.g., using air purifiers, controlling humidity, avoiding smoke, regular dusting)
  • Surgical treatments:
  • Considered when non-surgical methods are insufficient
  • For anatomical issues like a significantly deviated nasal septum or nasal polyps
  • Aims to improve airflow, remove obstructions, or correct structural abnormalities to alleviate symptoms and improve overall nasal condition.

Prevention for Nose & Sinus Conditions

To help maintain healthy sinuses and nose, consider these tips:

  • Identify and avoid known allergens and irritants.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking enough fluids.
  • Practice good nasal hygiene with regular saline rinses.
  • Schedule regular medical check-ups, especially if you have a history of recurrent sinus conditions.
  • Protect yourself from extreme temperatures and air pollution for good nose care.

When to See an ENT Specialist for Nasal & Sinus Conditions

If you experience persistent or concerning nasal and sinus symptoms, don’t hesitate to consult an ENT specialist in Singapore. Dr Gan’s clinic sees both adult and paediatric ENT concerns, making it relevant for those looking for an ENT specialist for children and adults.  Be attentive to issues such as:

  • A consistently blocked nose leading to mouth breathing or snoring.
  • Nasal congestion that doesn’t improve with standard treatments.
  • Recurrent sinus infections.
  • Chronic facial pain or pressure.
  • Ongoing difficulty breathing through your nose.
  • A lasting reduction or loss of your sense of smell.
  • Persistent thick or coloured nasal discharge.
  • Frequent or severe nosebleeds.

For chronic or severe sinus conditions, an ENT specialist can provide comprehensive care, including discussing advanced treatment options like sinus surgery in Singapore if appropriate. Promptly addressing persistent symptoms can help prevent potential complications and ensure you receive timely and specialised care for your nasal and sinus health.

Dr Gan provides comprehensive management of a broad array of Ear, Nose, and Throat as well as Head & Neck conditions. He has a special interest in treating various nose and sinus conditions, including snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)
